Uses for Old Gas BBQs - Part 3

Welding cart...

This page is yet another use for an old BBQ frame.

In an effort to enhance my fabricating skills I wanted to break from the tried and true "Drill & Bolt" fastening technology that had been employed up to this point.

The rack is stripped own to just tubing and the flat plate pieces...

The Tube & plate work is re-oriented a couple of times before I settled on this arrangement.

There was considerable grinding off of paint and rust.

Initially numerous tack welds were done to just set the basic structure... and later more grinding and re-welding to ensure that it was a rigid frame.

The completed frame has a plywood lower shelf bolted into place, while every thing is painted a stunning shade of High Gloss Black.

As well, theworkshop.ca is stenciled on with some grey primer that was the first spray-can that I grabbed that wasn't black.

And as it turns out, I've diverted more capital funds into some practical hardware in anticipation of the wholesale global collapse of the economic markets.

The "Flux-Core" MIG welder  will be integrated into theworkshop.ca tool arsenal for welding light steels such as these.

This type of work is simply not possible with the heavy 200Amp stick welder given my limited skill-set.

Everything is set into place with some space to spare.

The top arms that extend over the welder may eventually have a piece of 1/4" plate affixed to provide a surface to work from, though it is as functional as I need for now.

And to think that one of the sales whores that I was checking prices with early on implied that a $60 welding cart was such a good deal, how could I question it...

Lastly, a sincere thanks to Steve @ MacDonald Construction for acting as a "go-between" and picking-up the welder, and T. Cruise for transporting it the last leg of 60 or 70Km out to theworkshop.ca...

The Carbon offset in just that sort of planning may well reverse this entire global warming trend...
