Digging a Pond

Aug 2004

This shovel is just a monster compared to my Back-hoe...

I have to admit that I have "bucket envy", perhaps I'll have to consider a boom extension...

And it begins...

I hope that this picture puts to rest any concerns about damages to a sensitive wild life habitat.

Keeping things above-board I'd made all the proper checks with the Ministry of the environment, and as the bog dries-up completely by mid June it dose not qualify as sensitive or protected wet-lands.

This image also gives you a sense of how big the pond will be when done, approx 100ft by 300ft or 3/4 Acre.

At the end of day one, this is the view from the top of a 20ft plus pile of fill that has just been removed.

The pond will taper back from here to the tree line and be connected to another pond that is several hundred feet further back in the bush of the upper right corner of the image.

Any concerns about water are put to rest as we lost count of the number of springs that are feeding the hole.

There is actually so much water coming in that we'll have to rent a heavy-duty pump in the morning to keep the pace of digging up...

I've finally hit rock-bottom, literally I'm standing on a shelf of solid rock that runs the width of basin.

As the lighting is poor you can't make-out that the sides toward the bottom are "Blue Clay".

This will impart a brilliant turquoise tone to the water when the pond is full.
